This is an Afghan Baluch Prayer Rug, Taimani Tribe c. 1950's. A prayer rug is a smaller rug (for portability) that has a directional design with a mihrab, prayer niche, which the supplicant points towards Mecca. On either side of the mihrab are areas for the hands to rest as the rug's owner prays on his knees. These are called "the hands of Fatima." The size is 2'6"x3'11". This is a mixed technique rug which the Afghan dealers call berjiste. This piece is a veritable sampler of Afghan Baluch weaving techniques, with knotted pile (borders and field panels) and plainweave kilim with bands of weft float brocade decoration (ends and field panels). Weft float brocade decoration is accomplished by supplementary wefts that appear on the back of the textile as long running wefts in a mirror image of the design on the face of the textile. Though about 50 years old this rug is in like-new, unused condition.About the weaver. We know that she was a woman for it was they who did the weaving in Baluch society. The Taimani inhabit an area to the east of Herat in Ghor Province. They are the largest sub-tribe in a four sub-tribe alliance known as the Chahar Aimaq Confederation.
