This
is an Afghan
Baluch Prayer Rug, Taimani Tribe c. 1950's. A prayer
rug is a smaller rug (for portability) that has a directional
design with a mihrab, prayer niche, which the supplicant
points towards Mecca. On either side of the mihrab are areas
for the hands to rest as the rug's owner prays on his
knees. These are called "the hands of Fatima."Though
about 50 years old this rug is in like-new, unused condition.
The size is 2'9"x4'11", in like-new and
unused condition. This is a classic Taimani design
with its squared off head and shoulders prayer niche. On
the blue ground of the prayer panel and prayer niche are
regimented small botehs, which are variously believed to
represent leaves, flames, bushes or pinecones. There are
two dragon repeat minor borders in the border system. Their
heads and tails conjoin to form kotchaks, rams' horns.
Wool pile on white wool warps and blue/gray cotton wefts.
About the weaver: We know that she was a woman for it was
they who did the weaving in Baluch society. The Taimani
inhabit an area to the east of Herat in Ghor Province. They
are the largest sub-tribe in a four sub-tribe alliance known
as the Chahar Aimaq Confederation.
