Spot Removal Guide

General Cleaning Tips:

The information provided here offers basic advice on the most common spots and spills. These guidelines are intended for wool pile rugs. If you have a rug that has been tea washed or painted, it should not be subjected to these procedures. It should be sent immediately to Oriental Rug Cleaners for proper cleaning.

Spots and spills should be attended to promptly. Follow the guidelines below and always work from the outside of the stain towards the center to prevent spreading. Do not overwet. Be sure to rinse well and dry thoroughly. After stain has been removed, groom the rug with a horsehair brush.

Stain Removal Kit:

Keep these items handy in case you have an emergency:

1. White towels  9. Hair spray
2. Cotton swabs 10. White vinegar
3. Spatula 11. Brown paper bag
4. Dry cleaning solvent (Energene®) 12. Club soda
5. Isopropyl alcohol 13. 3% hydrogen peroxide
6. Ivory Liquid® 14. Box of salt
7. Clear household ammonia 15. Horsehair brush
8. Nail polish remover 16. Distilled water

Solution Recipes:

These are recipes for solutions used in removal techniques below:

Detergent Solution: 1 teaspoon Ivory Liquid® + 1 cup distilled water

Dry Cleaning Solution: Energene® (full strength)

Vinegar solution: 1/3 cup white vinegar + 2/3 cup distilled water

Ammonia solution: 1 Tablespoon white ammonia + 3/4 cup distilled water

Handy Spot Removal Guide:

Alcohol/Beer/Whiskey

1. Spray with club soda.

2. Blot dry using white towel

Blood

1. Wear rubber gloves and apply isopropyl alcohol and let set 10 min.

2. Apply cool detergent solution and blot with white towel.

3. Apply cool ammonia solution and blot with white towel.

4. Rinse with distilled water and blot dry with white towel.

Black Carbon

1. Saturate cotton swab with hairspray.

2. Blot area with swab until there is no transfer.

3.Rinse area thoroughly and blot dry with white towel.

Burns

1. A vinegar solution and blot with white towel.

2. Rinse with distilled water and blot dry with white towel.

3.Trim burned fibers with scissors.

Candle Wax

1.Place brown paper bag over spot.

2.Place iron over bag. Be sure iron is set to wool setting.

3.Let set for about 30 seconds. DO NOT LET SET TOO LONG.

4.Keep replacing paper, as wax is soaked into it.

Chocolate

1. Apply cool detergent solution and blot with white towel.

2. Apply ammonia solution and blot with white towel.

3. Rinse with distilled water. Blot again with white towel.

4. Apply white vinegar solution. Blot with white towel.

5. Rinse with distilled water and blot dry with white towel.

Coffee/Tea/Cola

1. Flush with club soda. Blot with white towel.

2. Apply white vinegar solution and blot with white towel.

3. Rinse with distilled water and blot dry with white towel.

Fruit Juice/Jelly/Soda/Artificial Colors

1. Apply detergent solution and blot with white towel.

2. Apply white vinegar solution and blot with white towel.

3. Rinse with distilled water and blot with white towel.

4. Apply detergent solution and blot with white towel.

5. Rinse with distilled water and blot dry with white towel.

Grass

1. Apply detergent solution and blot with white towel.

2. Rinse with tap water; blot again with white towel.

3. Apply ammonia solution and blot with white towel.

4. Apply white vinegar solution and blot with white towel.

5. Rinse with distilled water and blot dry with white towel.

Ink (Ball Point)

1. Apply dry cleaning solution and blot with white towel.

Gravy/Ketchup/Mustard

1. Apply detergent solution and blot with white towel.

2. Apply white vinegar solution and blot with white towel.

3. Apply detergent solution and blot with white towel.

4. Rinse with distilled water and blot dry with white towel.

Gum

1. Chill with ice cubes.

2. Scrape off as much of the gum as possible.

3. Apply dry cleaning solution and blot with white towel.

Grease/Oil/Clear Salad Dressing

1. Apply a dry cleaning solution and blot with white towel.

Milk

1. Apply warm distilled water or soda water and blot.

2. Apply dish detergent solution and blot.

3. Apply ammonia solution and blot again.

4. Rinse with distilled water and blot dry.

Mud

1. Let dry.

2. Brush, scrape or vacuum off as much as possible.

3. Apply detergent solution.

4. Rinse with distilled water and blot dry with white towel.

Nail Polish

1. Apply dry cleaning solution. Blot with white towel.

2. Apply a non-oily nail polish remover. (Note: Nail polish remover may dissolve some fibers - PRE-TEST FIRST!)

3. Rinse with distilled water and blot dry with white towel.

Shoe Polish/Tar

1. Apply a dry cleaning solution. Blot with white towel.

2. Repeat until stain fades.

3. Apply detergent solution and blot with white towel.

4. Apply ammonia solution and blot with white towel.

5. Rinse with distilled water and blot dry with white towel.

Urine/Animal Stains

1. Apply detergent solution and blot with white towel.

2. Apply ammonia solution. Blot again with white towel.

3. Rinse with distilled water and blot with white towel.

4. Apply white vinegar solution. Blot again with white towel.

5. Rinse with distilled water and blot dry with white towel.

Vomit

1. Apply detergent solution. Blot with white towel.

2.Rinse with distilled water and blot with towel again.

3.Apply ammonia solution. Blot with white towel.

4.Rinse with distilled water. Blot dry with white towel.
